Do You Know What You’re Putting Onto Your Face?

When you consider the amount of skin care products each of us uses in our lifetime things can get a little scary.

Shampoos, shower gels, cleansers, toners, moisturizers, facial scrubs – every day we may use up to 10 products alone.

This means that we are exposing our bodies to an onslaught of unnatural chemical additives.

Although most shop-bought products are deemed to be safe, as you can imagine, over a lifetime of use the chemical count adds up. The reality is that no one can be completely sure about the chemicals in skin care products and how they may affect our bodies.

And while, as yet, there are no known links between beauty products and diseases or illnesses some people just aren’t happy using products that aren’t 100% natural.

Here Are The Top 10 Reasons For Choosing Natural Skin Care Products

1.You Can Make Your Own

The only way to know exactly what you are putting onto your skin, and therefore into your body, is to make your own all natural skin care products.

Making your own beauty products is a very satisfying process, you get to keep things 100% natural and can enjoy being something of a kitchen alchemist – making up your very own home beauty recipes.

In addition to this making your own products saves you money and helps to save the planet, as the need for packaging is unimportant. Any glass bottles and containers you buy to store your products in can also be frequently recycled.

2. The Skin – Body Connection

The substances you put onto your skin find their way into your body. If you think about it, people who want to stop smoking wear nicotine patches and menopausal women are routinely prescribed hormone patches.

This means you are potentially exposing your body to a whole range of chemical substances without fully understanding the effects they could have on your body.

3. Fewer Fillers

Shop bought products are packed with ‘filler’ ingredients that are of no value to your skin, such as parabens, colorants, artificial fragrances, emulsifiers and oils derived from petrochemicals.

They are added to make the product look and smell more appealing and yet some reports suggest that some of these chemicals may also be found in motor engine degreaser and anti-freeze.

The best natural skin care products, especially those you make yourself at home, use plant emulsifiers and essential oils instead of synthetic ones.

4. More Active Ingredients

Natural skin care brands contain, on average 80 -90% active ingredients compared to high street brands, which may contain less than 10%.

Active ingredients are what count in skin care products as they contain the ingredients that make a product work.

5. Non-Allergenic

Many people with sensitive skin find they cannot tolerate shop bought products and even people with normal skin types may find that they break out in a rash or spots when they try out a new product.

This is most often caused by a reaction to harsh chemicals in the products.

Although it is possible to be allergic to some natural ingredients – nuts and strawberries are two that come to mind – it is easier to identify what may cause your skin to react if you can fully understand the ingredient list on your product or have made it yourself.

6. Organic

Organic products are made using ingredients that have been grown without the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, making them better for our bodies and better for our planet.

Check labels carefully to see if products labeled organic really are organic – better still make your own natural beauty products using organic ingredients you have purchased yourself from a reputable source.

7. Feed Your Face

A natural skin care product is more likely to contain ingredients that actually ‘feed’ your skin vital nutrients, getting to the very core of what skin care should actually be.

Many high street products simply coat your skin with an artificial layer of additives, or they attack the skin in an aggressive way with a barrage of chemicals.

8. Healthier For Your Body And Mind

Studies suggest that artificial ingredients in some shop bought products can cause unpleasant side effects such as skin allergies, hormonal disturbances and even cancer.

While there are no definite links to back up these claims as yet – why take a risk? Natural products are far less likely to have any of the more serious side effects.

9. Social Responsibility

If you choose your skin care products carefully, or make your own from organic ingredients, you are contributing to a more socially responsible way of living. Organic products are produced without causing harm to the environment, animals or other people.

10. Traditional Wisdom

Men and women have been making their own health and beauty products since time began. And although some home-remedies from the past were found to be dangerous we can learn a great deal about natural health and skin care from our ancestors.

Traditional wisdom has fallen out of favor in recent years with people enjoying and relying on the advances of science and technology, however many home remedies have value because of tried and tested use.

Making use of knowledge from the past is vital part of achieving a more natural way of life.

What Are Enlarged Pores?

Pores play an important part in skin physiology, for one, they allow the skin’s natural oils to surface to protect our skin from the environment.

They contain hair follicles, sebum and sweat glands, which means that they can easily become clogged.

Dead skin cells from the skin’s outer layer become stuck to the surface, creating the appearance of an enlarged pore.

In addition to this these dead skin cells can become coated in oil and provide a feeding ground for bacteria. This leads to blackheads, spots and pimples.

We all have pores, although it’s easy to believe that some celebrities and models don’t have them at all!

Airbrushing is now commonplace in fashion and beauty photography, and any, even minor, imperfection can be removed from an image before a magazine or advertisement goes to print.

Enlarged pores pose a problem for many people and can look unsightly or lead to the formation of blackheads, so it makes sense that many people look for ways to minimize pores on the face.

What Causes Enlarged Pores?

Pores can appear enlarged for a variety of reasons – these include:

Genetics

If you have oily or a thicker skin type your pores may be more visible than in someone with dry skin. Enlarged pores are very often hereditary.

Poor Skin Care

If you do not regularly cleanse and exfoliate your skin you may be more susceptible to enlarged pores. Exfoliation can help to keep pores clear by encouraging the growth of new, healthy skin cells.

Oily Skin

People with oily skin are more prone to the problem of enlarged pores. Surface oil collecting on the skin can sit around the edges of pores making them appear larger than they actually are.

Sun Damage

Sun damage causes the skin to thicken and excess cells can collect in the pores, exaggerating their appearance.

Blackheads

Enlarged pores and blackheads go together. Blackheads visually draw attention to pores as they expand the appearance of the pore.

How To Reduce Pores

Minimizing pores is a skin-care goal for many people. The best way to do this is by targeting the factors that can make pores seem larger and more visible. This includes:

Removing blackheads

Exfoliating skin debris

Reducing excess skin oiliness

Eliminating bacteria on the skin

Closing or tightening the pores

Home Remedies To Minimize Pores On Face

If you want to know how to minimize large pores naturally there are a several easy home remedies you can try out to help treat this problem.

1. Steam Treatment

One of the most useful ways to soften and unclog skin pores is the steam method. This helps to open pores up and dislodge skin impurities. All you have to do is boil some water and transfer it to bowl or tub.

With the tub standing on a heat-proof surface you cover your head and the tub with a towel creating a ‘steam tent’ – be careful not to put your face too close to the tub if the water is still very hot.

Allow the steam to work on your skin for around 5 minutes. After this time you can wash your face with tepid water and pat dry with a clean towel.

Some experts suggest that if you want to remove blackheads the time to do it is after you have ‘steamed’ your face. This is because the process of steaming softens the skin and opens the pores, making it easier to extract the plug of debris.

Blackhead extraction requires great care, when done incorrectly it can lead to the formation of spots and blemishes.

If blackheads cause your enlarged pores, and you want to remove them, make sure your hands are scrupulously clean. Cover your fingertips with fine tissue to avoid transferring more bacteria to the area.

2. Exfoliation

To keep enlarged pores under control it is recommended that you exfoliate your skin 2 – 3 times per week as pores can become blocked by dirt, debris and dead skin cells.

You can make your own natural exfoliators at home. For all recipes simply combine all the ingredients together in a bowl:

Recipe 1 – Apple Facial Scrub

Suitable for normal skin

2 teaspoons sugar

2 teaspoons cornflour

1 teaspoon almond oil

Pure apple juice added bit by bit to bind

Recipe 2 – Sugar Scrub

Suitable for oily, spot-prone skin

1 tablespoon sugar

A few drops of water

Recipe 3 – Oat Bran Scrub

Suitable for dry sensitive or mature skin

1 teaspoon oat bran

1 teaspoon sugar

1 teaspoon honey or jojoba oil

To use, massage into the skin for a few minutes using small, gentle, circular movements with your fingertips. Rinse away with tepid water and pat your skin dry.

Be careful not to scrub at your skin too roughly as this may cause irritation. Also avoid exfoliating over areas of skin that are sensitive, blemished or broken.

3. Facial Masks

Facial masks can help to tighten pores and are particularly useful when applied directly after you have steamed your face.

Clay is an excellent ingredient for a facemask as it helps to shrink and tighten pores. You can buy cosmetic clay from a health food store to make your own facemask at home.

To make combine:

1 tablespoon of clay

½ teaspoon honey

1 drop tea tree, palmarosa or rosewood essential oil

Apply the mixture to your face, being careful to avoid the eye area, and leave for 15 – 20 minutes. When the time is up, simply wash the mask away with tepid water and pat your skin dry.

Egg white facial masks are also thought to help tighten pores. All you need to do is separate the white of an egg from the yolk and apply to your skin.

After a few minutes, when the egg white has dried on your skin, rinse it off with warm water before patting dry your skin.

Dry And Oily Skin A Problem?

Is your skin oily in the T-zone (the forehead, nose and chin) but dry or normal on your cheeks?

If this is true for you, then you have, what is known as, combination skin.

The right skin care for combination skin can be difficult to achieve as you can find yourself treating two completely opposed skin types – dry and oily.

While it is possible to buy combination skin products these may not be as effective as treating the different areas of your facial skin differently.

Fortunately there are some natural ingredients that work well for normal, oily and dry skin types and using these can help you to get the balance right.

To begin with let’s look at the definition of combination skin.

Combination skin is usually characterized by the following traits:

An oily T-zone over the forehead, nose, sides of the nose and chin

Normal or dry skin on the cheeks

Combination Skin Care Tips

Although it might be easier to choose combination skin products that can be used all over your face, it is probably better to take account of your skin as it really is. That is two different skin types with different skin care needs.

So if pimples and oiliness are a problem it makes sense to target this problem with products specifically created for oily, spot-prone skin.

If your cheeks feel very tight, dry or flaky then it also makes sense to use a moisturizer that is richer than the one you use for the T-zone.

As you are about to find out, however, aromatherapy oils are perfect for those people who have combination skin.

Several base oils are suitable for all skin types and many essential oils have skin healing properties that can treat any combination of oily, normal and dry skin. This means you can create your own beauty products for combination skin.

You can choose shop bought products for combination skin but it is worth investigating natural, homemade skin care options.

This way you get to know what you’re putting onto your skin and can also overcome the problem of having to spend lots of money. There’s no need to buy two different types of skin care product to treat your one face!

Best Cleanser For Combination Skin

Oil based cleansers work well for normal, oily and dry skin types. Several aromatherapy base oils are suitable for all skin types and can be used as they come, without the need for dilution with another carrier oil.

These include:

Sweet almond

Grapeseed

Hazelnut

Safflower

Apricot kernel

Essential oils that work well for combination skin include lavender, palmarosa and geranium. These oils are particularly good for balancing both dry and oily skin conditions. Other oils that work well for combination skin include:

Chamomile

Rosewood

Petitgrain

Frankincense

Neroli

Rose

To make an oil-based cleanser for combination skin all you need to do is add five drops of your chosen essential oil, or five drops of any combination of up to three essential oils, to ten ml of base oil.

Store the cleanser in a dark colored glass bottle and keep in a cool, dry, dark place.

Apply to the skin using cotton wool balls and leave to act for five minutes, finally rinse away with cotton wool balls soaked in warm water and pat your skin dry.

Best Toner For Combination Skin

When it comes to toner and combination skin this is a step you may want to avoid, especially if you have normal to dry skin on your cheeks.

Harsh toners don’t work for most skin types as they can aggravate dry skin and cause oily skin to produce even more oil, encouraging further skin breakouts.

If you really want to use a toner stick to a gentle one, like orange flower water or rose water for your T-zone. Avoid any toner that contains alcohol as this aggravates sensitive skin.

Best Moisturizer For Combination Skin

It’s just as important to moisturize combination skin twice a day as it is for any skin type and this includes moisturizing the oily T-zone.

Try adding one drop of petitgrain oil, two drops of palmarosa or rosewood oil and two drops of lavender oil to ten ml sweet almond oil.

Apply at least 30 minutes before going out in the morning or before you go to bed at night to allow the oil to completely sink into your skin.

Exfoliator For Combination Skin

Combination skin can benefit from exfoliation two-three times per week. They key to successfully exfoliating this skin type is to keep it gentle.

Many shop-bought exfoliators are too harsh and will strip both your dry and oily areas of their natural, healthy oils.

You can make your own exfoliator by combining one teaspoon of oat bran with one teaspoon of honey and then adding one drop of lavender essential oil.

Simply massage the paste into your skin, being careful not to scrub the skin too vigorously, and then rinse away with warm water.

Facemask For Combination Skin

To pamper combination skin you can apply a homemade facemask once a week. All you have to do is make your facemask, apply it to your skin and then lie back and relax for 15 – 30 minutes as the ingredients work their magic.

Try mashing a handful of strawberries or a ripe avocado and apply to your skin. You can add a beaten egg yolk to either of these for an added boost if you like.

Remove the mask after around 30 minutes with cotton wool balls dipped in warm water or with rose water if you prefer.

When a person reaches the teenage years their skin begins to change. As hormone levels fluctuate during puberty both teenage boys and girls notice a difference to their skin.

For some dryness becomes a problem, for many others excess oiliness and pimples are the problem.

Skin faces a daily barrage of dirt, grime and pollution and needs to be kept clean to stay looking healthy and clear. When the skin begins to change in the teenage years it makes sense to start a daily skin care routine.

Getting into good skin care habits as a teenager will pay off in the future. The sooner you begin to protect your skin from pollution and the elements the better.

When you’re a teenager your 40s, 50s and 60s may seem a long way off but as any 40+ person will tell you – time goes a lot faster than you may think.

If you look after your skin now you may be able to hold off wrinkles and premature skin aging in the future. And once you reach your 40s, looking younger than your age is definitely a positive!

Dos And Don’ts

There are 5 essential skin care tips for teenagers that should form the bedrock of any skin care regime. These are:

1. Avoid The Sun And Use Sunscreen

Sun damage is arguably the number one cause of premature skin aging. Protect your skin from the sun now and reap the rewards of a smooth, wrinkle-free younger looking complexion when you are older.

Protect your skin from strong sun with a baseball cap or wide brimmed hat and always wear sunglasses in strong sun. This will stop your from repeatedly squinting – a major cause of wrinkles around the eyes.

2. Don’t Take Up Smoking

Smoking is bad for your health, it causes life-shortening diseases and it ruins the skin.

When people get older you can usually tell, just by looking, who has smoked and who hasn’t.

Smokers have deeper wrinkles generally and especially around the mouth. Their complexions are often dull and their skin may appear thicker or coarser.

Smoking robs the body of vital skin-friendly nutrients that help to keep skin supple and clear. The simplest solution is to never start smoking!

3. Pay Attention To Your Diet

Bad food choices equal bad skin. If you constantly overload your body with junk food your skin will become bloated, puffy and dull-looking.

A diet rich in fresh fruit and vegetables, lean meat, fish, beans, pulses and whole grains is a sensible choice for your skin and for your overall health – now and in the long-term.

And don’t forget, drinking 6 – 8 glasses of water per day is the absolute foundation for beautiful, clear, moist and supple looking skin.

Foods high in sugar and fat age the skin and can lead to a whole range of serious, ongoing medical conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.

Try to get into good eating habits at an early age for the sake of your skin and your health.

4. Exercise

Exercise is good for your mind and your body, helping you to maintain a healthy weight whilst also improving your mood.

Exercise is also good for your skin as it improves circulation, allowing for the delivery of essential nutrients to all of your body’s cells. This makes skin cell renewal more effective and helps to keep your skin looking vibrant and clear.

In addition to this, during exercise your body produces more collagen, which is essential for skin elasticity and can help to prevent skin sagging.

Try to exercise for 20 – 30 minutes, 4 – 5 times per week, choose any physical activity you enjoy be it aerobics, running, cycling or swimming. Your body and your skin will reap the benefits.

5. Skin Care For Teens

Starting a skin care regime at the first signs of hormone-related skin changes will pay off now and in the future.

Cleansing and moisturizing the skin twice per day, morning and night is a great step towards achieving beautiful glowing skin right now, and in the future as you age.

Don’t be tempted to pick at any spots or pimples. This will spread bacteria to other parts of your face and may cause more spots. Treat spots with a medicated blemish stick instead.

Skin Care For Teenagers

The following teenage skin care routine will help you to achieve healthy looking skin that glows…

In The Morning

1. Begin the day by washing your face with a clean, warm wash cloth, you can do this in the shower.

Make sure your hands are clean before you touch your face.

Alternatively you can use a gentle cleanser applied to the face with cotton wool balls – be sure to rinse away thoroughly with warm water.

Warm water helps to open up your pores to get them clean. Use gentle, circular motions to wash your face and do not drag or scrub the skin.

Be aware that some teenage skin care products can be too harsh especially the ones formulated to control acne.

Choose products that are as gentle and natural as possible – this is very important if you have dry or sensitive skin.

You don’t want the products you choose to aggravate your skin cause breakouts or redness.

2. After cleansing give your face a refreshing splash with some cold water. This helps to close and tighten the pores. Cold water also increases blood circulation to the skin, which can help to improve the complexion.

3. Use a clean towel to pat-dry your face, making sure you don’t rub at your face too vigorously. Dragging the skin can cause wrinkling and sagging in the future.

4. Apply a gentle moisturizer; one with natural ingredients is suitable for young skin. Don’t use heavy creams as these are not suitable for young skin, no matter what your skin type is.

Apply to your face using clean fingertips being careful, once again, not to drag your skin.

In The Evening

All you need to do at the end of the day, before you go to bed, is to follow the same, step-by-step skin care routine you used in the morning.

It’s vital to clean the skin at night after you have been out and about all day and especially if you have been wearing make up.

It can be tempting to forgo your evening skin care routine when you’re tired, but going to bed without cleansing your skin can lead to skin irritation, pore blockage and skin breakouts – something most teenagers want to avoid.

Look Good Forever

Twice daily cleansing and moisturizing will help to keep your skin clean and looking good. What’s more, by getting into the habit of good skin care now you can keep your skin looking clear, smooth and supple for many years to come.

Natural skin care products are excellent for teenage skin because they do not contain the harsh chemicals and ingredients that aggravate the skin.

If you want to learn how to make natural products the Naturally Skinsational eBook is packed full of gentle skin care recipes, made from simple ingredients, that you can make yourself and try out at home.

In recent years there have been a variety of studies that suggest the Japanese may hold the secrets to anti-aging.

Longevity aside, Japanese men and women are rarely overweight or obese and their skin ages well.

While the Japanese may be genetically predisposed to younger looking skin – Asian skin is generally thicker and contains more natural oils – it cannot be disputed that the Japanese diet and lifestyle may also have a positive bearing on their skin.

So just how do the Japanese keep their skin looking so good? Below are some hints and tips that may help to unlock those all-important Japanese skin care secrets…

Diet And Lifestyle

1. Diet

The Japanese diet is high in naturally healthy foods and low in sugary, high-fat foods. Sugar has been proven in recent years to be a major contributor to prematurely aging skin.

Fresh oily fish, beans, seaweed, healthy oils, tofu and soy products, rice, vegetables and fruits are all everyday ingredients found in the Japanese diet.

The Japanese diet is based on the concept of ‘eating with your eyes,’ by allowing yourself to enjoy the visual appearance of your food.

Beautifully prepared foods contribute to this, as does food variety with some Japanese people believing that you should eat up to 30 different types of food per day to get a wide variety of different tastes and nutrients.

Portion control is also important, the Japanese generally eat 25% fewer calories each day compared to the average American. Reducing calorie intake by just 8 – 10 % has been shown to increase longevity.

Eating less also helps you to avoid bloating and prevents your skin from becoming puffy. The Japanese diet is therefore based on tasty, low-calorie foods that help you to feel full for longer.

2. Water

We all know that water is the number one ingredient in any anti-aging diet. The Japanese drink plenty of water and green tea throughout each day, helping to lubricate their skin on the inside.

Green tea is packed full of skin-friendly anti-oxidants that help to protect your skin from the harmful free radicals that are a major cause of skin aging.

Green tea may also help to regulate your appetite and may protect you from some cancers.

3. Sun Protection

The Japanese are fanatical about protecting their skin from the sun. With sun damage being one of the major causes of premature skin aging this makes sense.

The Japanese not only use sun block, but also protect their skin from the elements with wide-brimmed hats, gloves and by using parasols in bright sunshine.

Skin Fasting

One of the best Japanese skin care tips that is easy for anyone to try out is known as ‘skin fasting.’ Many Japanese women swear by it as a means for keeping their skin looking youthful and vibrant.

Skin fasting simply means allowing your skin to rest for one day a week. This involves using no products or make-up on your skin one day each week to let it breathe and give it well-earned rest.

The belief is that your skin is perfectly able to cleanse itself naturally and should be allowed to do so every now and then.

Leaving your skin completely product-free for one day a week allows your skin to heal, recuperate and rebalance naturally.

Overfeeding or overloading your skin with products can lead to a dull, puffy or spotty complexion. Left to breathe once a week your skin will start to look and feel better.

Japanese Skin Care Products

Commercial Japanese skin care products are known to be some of the very best, with technological advances in Japan meaning that the Japanese are often at the forefront of any new skin care trend.

However there are many natural products you can use to make your own Japanese-inspired skin care products at home.

Japanese Facial Scrub

Combine 2 tablespoons of finely ground rice powder with 2 tablespoons of adzuki bean powder. Mix the dry ingredients with a small amount of water to make a paste each time you want to exfoliate your skin.

Gently massage into your skin using small, circular movements and then rinse well with warm water.

Green Tea Skin Toner

Green tea has skin benefits when taken as a drink but it is also good for your skin when applied topically. It’s easy to make a green tea toner by adding boiling water to green tea powder or steeping green tea leaves in boiling water.

Simply leave the tea to cool and then store in a dark colored bottle in a cool, dark place. Apply to your skin with cotton wool balls after cleansing or exfoliating to gently tone and refresh your skin.

Japanese Camellia Oil

Japanese camellia oil, sometimes known as japonica or tea seed oil is suitable for all skin types and also suitable for anyone who cannot use nut oils because of nut allergy.

It is rich in natural anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids.

It makes an excellent rejuvenating and moisturizing facial oil and can also be used to moisturize the entire body and condition the hair.

Nature Provides All You Need For Beautiful Skin

Nature has given us all we need to care for our bodies. Natural foods are the healthiest and most nutritious choice for our bodies but they also contain ingredients that can benefit our skin when applied directly.

Our skin simply does not need manufactured beauty products because nature has provided us with a wide range of ingredients that heal the skin, prevent wrinkles and slow down the signs of aging.

// ]]>

Good skin is a reflection of your inner health…

The aging process, diet and poor skincare habits are not the only things that can affect your skin.

Stress is a major cause of many skin health problems.

The negative effects of stress are cumulative as stress can cause lack of sleep or alter your appetite, both of which can contribute to premature skin aging and skin problems.

Stress also makes some people smoke or drink alcohol more frequently, which in turn also contributes to prematurely aged, dull-looking skin.

Stress And Skin Problems

If you suddenly notice a change to the condition of your skin, or start experiencing unexplained skin problems and you have not changed your diet or skin care routine, stress may be the cause.

When you are under pressure your skin is too, in fact the condition of your skin can be a reflection of what is going on inside your body.

During periods of stress, stress hormones such as cortisol go into overdrive; this slows down the turnover of cells causing the body to become overloaded with toxins.

As the skin tries to excrete these toxins stress related skin conditions may occur.

How Stress Affects The Skin

Some dermatologists believe that unaddressed emotional problems affect the skin. The theory is that during development in the womb the skin and the brain are formed from the same cells, giving a mind-skin connection.

Unresolved emotional upset may therefore affect the skin causing any number of skin conditions.

Some skin conditions may be short-lived due to short-term stress, for example a college student may experience increased acne or spots around the time of exams.

The stress hormone cortisol can increase the production of oil making a person more prone to spots and pimples. Prolonged stress, however, may lead to long-term skin problems that are difficult to treat.

Skin Problems Caused By Stress

Stress related skin problems might show up as:

Acne, spots and pimples

Increased itching or hives/rashes

Psoriasis or eczema

Increased skin dryness or oiliness

Redness

Rosacea

Sensitive skin

Rough, dry patches of skin

Pale or ashen complexion

Dark circles around the eyes

Recognizing The Symptoms Of Stress

Stress affects your skin in many ways. Lack of sleep affects the repair and renewal of skin leaving you with a dull, tired and aged complexion.

Anxiety and tension can show up as a permanent frown which may accelerate the onset of frown lines.

Toxins accumulating because of an increase in the stress hormones can cause your facial skin to look puffy, pale or dull. And stress affects the immune system leaving you prone to acne, psoriasis or skin itchy rashes.

The causes of stress might be obvious to you, for example, you may be experiencing financial or relationship problems or you may be under pressure at work.

However the first step towards better skin health is recognizing the symptoms of stress to see if it is contributing to your skin problems.

The Physical Symptoms Of Stress Include:

Changes to the skin/poor skin condition/skin problems

Anxiety and worry

Sleeplessness/insomnia

Tiredness

Loss or increase of appetite

Headaches

High blood pressure

Shortness of breath/hyperventilation

Low libido

Excess sweating

Hair loss/hair thinning

The Emotional Symptoms Of Stress Include:

Irritability

Poor concentration/forgetfulness

Low self-esteem/feeling hopeless

Depression

Panic attacks

Loss of sense of humor

Relationship problems

Increased reliance on bad habits – smoking, drinking alcohol, over or under-eating, addictive behaviors

Managing Stress For Healthier Skin

There is a great deal you can do to manage and reduce stress. Avoiding stress completely is impossible as everyone experiences stressful events and situations at various points in their life.

Recognizing the symptoms of stress and then resolving to tackle them is a positive step towards better skin health and better health in general.

The following tips can help to you to tackle short-term stress to reduce or prevent skin problems.

1) Exercise – Physical activity can help to reduce stress, even a regular 20-minute walk in the fresh air will help you to feel better.

Choose any activity you like, if you prefer to remain indoors use exercise equipment or DVDs.

Regular activity will improve your mood, boost circulation and reduce aging acidity in your body’s tissues.

2) Learn Relaxation Techniques – Yoga, Tai Chi, meditation and breathing exercises can all help you to learn to relax and feel more in control of your life.

Joining a class is sociable and this can also help to improve your mood.

Any activity that takes you away from your normal stressful routine and allows you some relaxation time will help to lower your stress levels, for example a long relaxing soak in a warm bath at night also gives you the time and space to unwind.

3) Learn To Prioritize And Delegate – You’re only human and can’t be expected to do everything.

If you feel that you have too much to do at work or at home make a list of priority tasks and work your way through them one by one.

Delegate responsibilities wherever you can and let the less important tasks wait.

4) Address Negative Habits – Bad habits like smoking, drinking or eating the wrong kinds of foods can be difficult to give up when you are under stress. Try to keep any bad habits under control and make some simple changes.

Reducing your caffeine intake is an easier compromise if you feel now is not the time to give up a bad habit. Caffeine is a stimulant found in tea, coffee and some soft drinks and can exacerbate symptoms of anxiety and tension.

5) Stay Positive – Maybe easier said than done, but there is much you can do to improve your mood so your mind can let go of stress.

Spend time with cheerful, positive friends or relatives who make you laugh, watch comedy on TV or a funny film or listen to uplifting music.

Facial oils provide a wonderful boost to your skin and the good news is that it’s never been easier to make your own 100% natural facial oils using aromatherapy essential oils.

Essential oils are best described as the pure essences found in nature’s berries, barks, flowers, fruits, grasses, herbs, roots and seeds.

Every oil has its own unique fragrance, character and healing properties. Aromatherapy is the practice of using these oils to promote physical and psychological well-being.

Essential Oil Safety

1. Safety Basics

Only buy 100% pure natural essential oils.

Keep all essential oils out of reach of children. Never take essential oils internally.

If essential oils are swallowed accidently seek urgent medical attention. Avoid contact with the eyes, ears and mouth. Some oils are flammable; keep essential oils away from open flames, sparks, fires and electricity.

2. Less Is More

Essential oils are highly concentrated so a little goes a long way – this also makes them cost effective. It is vital that you do not exceed the recommended number of drops per facial oil recipe.

Oils to use sparingly include: cassia, cinnamon, clove, cumin, hyssop, lemongrass, oregano, peppermint and thyme.

3. When Not To Use Essential Oils

It is best to avoid using essential oils on children, if you are pregnant, have asthma, epilepsy or high blood pressure, have a skin condition or skin allergies, are on a course of medication, or you are in doubt about any health condition you have.

Always consult your doctor before using essential oils if you are unsure and if in doubt consult a qualified aromatherapist. Safety first!

4. How To Store Essential Oils

Essential oils should be used within one year of opening.

The best way to prolong the shelf life of your oils is to store them in dark glass bottles and keep them in a cool dark place, such as the fridge.

The shelf life of essential oils decreases when exposed to light, air and heat.

5. Photosensitivity

Some oils are sensitive to sunlight and can cause reactions leaving you with patches of skin discoloration. It is always best to stay out of the sun after applying essential oils to the skin.

Photosensitive oils include bergamot, cumin, ginger, grapefruit, lemon, mandarin, orange and tangerine.

Discover The Best Facial Oils For You

When making your facial oil recipe the most important thing to remember is to use only 10 drops of neat essential to every 10 ml of base oil so 20 drops of essential oil to 20 ml base oil, 30 drops to 30 ml and so on.

A – Z Of Base Oils For Skin Types And Conditions

Aromatherapy oils in their natural state are highly concentrated and must not be used directly on the skin.

A base oil is used to dilute essential oils so they can be used on your skin.

Base oils are made from vegetable, nuts and seeds and many also have their own therapeutic qualities.

If you are allergic to nuts it is obviously important to avoid using nut oils and to consult a qualified aromatherapist to discuss which base oil may be suitable for you to use safely.

Some oils can be used 100%, meaning you can use 30 ml of base oil to 30 drops of essential oil. Other base oils are used to be diluted so you would use 10 ml of one base oil, 20 ml of another base oil and 30 drops of essential oil.

// ]]>

The eyes are said to be the window to the soul and certainly over our lifetime our eyes will help us to express emotions good or bad.

As our eyes provide a focal point for our faces it is often one of the first of our features noticed by others.

So it stands to reason that many people want to keep their eyes looking good as they age.

Unfortunately the skin around the eyes is particularly susceptible to the signs of aging, being up to 10 times thinner than the skin on the rest of our faces.

If premature skin aging is a problem for you, you will probably have noticed that the dreaded crow’s feet were the first wrinkles to make their presence known on your face.

What Causes Wrinkles Around The Eyes?

We can call them laughter lines if we like but the truth is that deep lines around the eyes can add unwanted years to our appearance.

A number of factors can contribute to the damage of the skin around the eyes. These include:

Exposure to the sun

Smoking

Environmental pollution

Rubbing the skin frequently due to eye irritation caused by allergies

Tugging the skin during eye make-up removal

Tugging the skin when inserting and removing contact lenses

Top 5 Eye Skin Care Tips

So how can you minimize damage to the skin around your eyes? The following tips can help you to protect the most delicate skin on your face.

1. Stay Out Of The Sun

Possibly the number 1 rule! The sun causes premature aging of the skin, wrinkles and age spots.

As the skin around the eyes is up to 10 times more delicate than the skin of the rest of your face sun damage will show up earlier in this area than anywhere else.

Protect your eyes by using eye skin care products or a general facial moisturizer with an SPF of at least 15.

2. Don’t Smoke

A close second to sun damage. Smoking causes wrinkles we all know that!

The action of drawing on a cigarette often causes you to squint as you try to avoid getting smoke in your eyes acerbating the problem.

If you don’t want crow’s feet then don’t smoke – it’s that simple.

3. Wear Sunglasses

Bright sunlight makes you squint. Any action that causes you to squint or screw up your eyes on a regular basis will hasten the appearance of wrinkles around the eyes.

Protect both the health of your eyes and the skin around your eyes by wearing sunglasses.

4. Remove Make-Up Gently

Cotton pads or balls are recommended for removing eye make-up or applying cleanser to this delicate skin area.

Go particularly easy when working on this area during your skin care regime and avoid dragging the skin as this can cause further damage.

Likewise pat very gently with the tips of your fingers when applying eye cream.

5. Use Eye Skin Care Products

Your regular moisturizer may cause irritation when applied near to the eyes, so only use products on your eye skin that have been designed for this purpose.

It’s okay to use natural products that you have made yourself as long as they do not contain any known irritants.

Natural Skin Care For Naturally Beautiful Eyes

Skin care products for your eyes should be different for the ones you use on the rest of your face as these can be too harsh.

The eye skin area is not only delicate but also sensitive, and therefore more likely to become irritated by products.

Making your own skin care products is one way to be sure that anything you put onto your face is 100% natural.

The following formulas can be made easily at home and are suitable for the eye area.

Aromatherapy Eye Serums

When used regularly essential oils diluted in base oils applied to the eye area can help to diminish the appearance of fine lines and creasing.

As the skin in this area is extremely fragile it is however vital that you use the very light base oils and only a tiny amount of essential oil.

Hazelnut oil is ideal for the eye area as it is one of the lightest base oils, heavy creams and oils applied to the eye can cause sagging.

Make your eye serum according to your age group, mix the ingredients together well and store in a cool, dark place. Your eye serum should last for up to a month.

Apply a small amount of your serum to the eye area each night very gently. Leave the serum to soak in for 5 minutes and gently blot away any excess oil.

Age 18 – 30
10 ml Hazelnut oil
4 drops Chamomile essential oil

Age 30 – 40
10 ml Hazelnut oil
3 drops Evening primrose oil
2 drops Lavender oil
1 drop Lemon oil

Age 40 – 50
10 ml Hazelnut oil
6 drops Evening primrose oil
2 drops Lavender oil
2 drops Palma rosa oil

You can also add 1 Vitamin E capsule to this blend by piercing the capsule to extract the contents.

Age 50+
10 ml Hazelnut oil
5 drops Jojoba oil
1 drop Lavender oil
1 drop Rose oil or Bois de rose oil
1 drop lemon oil
Add 1 – 2 Vitamin E capsules for maximum effect

// ]]>

It goes without saying that skin care in winter will differ from the kind of skin care regime you adopt in the warmer months.

The colder weather brings with it several common skin complaints, the most obvious two being dry skin and a lackluster complexion.

The following are some helpful winter skin care tips to help you maintain your glow during the cold season.

How To Take Care Of Skin In Winter

1. Keep Yourself Hydrated

Our skin often looks better in the summer because we tend to drink more fluids during the warmer weather.

In particular we may up our intake of water.

Drinking 6 – 8 glasses of cold water may not seem so appealing once the colder weather sets in, so try upping your intake of herbal teas or simply drink boiled water that has been left to cool down slightly, add a slice of lemon to taste.

2. Get Moving

We also tend to exercise more during the warmer months.

Let’s face it heading outdoors for a run or summoning up the energy to make it to the gym takes a lot of will power when it’s cold outside.

And yet we all know that exercise is excellent for the complexion as it helps to pump blood to the skin’s surface and also encourages our bodies to flush away skin sapping toxins.

You don’t have to go outside but try to exercise throughout the winter making sure your chosen type of exercise gets your pulse rate up.

3. Change Your Products To Suit

The biggest battle between winter skin care versus summer skin care is that your skin becomes drier and loses some of its luster, so you may want to think about swapping your skin care products for ones that work better on dry skin.

Just as you don’t wear the same clothes in winter and summer, you don’t want to use same skin care products.

Choose a richer moisturizer or facial oil if your skin can tolerate it and swap your regular cleanser for one that includes more moisture enhancing properties.

Products containing glycerin, vitamin E and aloe are all useful when it comes to giving dry winter skin the TLC it needs.

4. Fight The Flakes – Change Your Makeup

During the summer months a shiny complexion can be a problem and you may find that your makeup literally can’t stand the heat, sliding off your face or giving your face a shiny appearance rather than glow.

In the winter the opposite is true and you can find that your regular foundation is difficult to apply, ends up looking flaky and shows up any dry patches on your skin.

In winter you may need to switch to a different foundation – liquid foundations and tinted moisturizers make the best choice if you want to maintain a dewy looking complexion.

5. Focus On Inner Beauty

It’s easy to resort to a stodgy diet and comfort eating once it starts to get colder but this is one of the most common reasons for dull looking skin during the winter months.

Combine the effects of the weather with the holiday season and all the rich food on offer and you have a certain recipe for ‘skin disaster’.

Eating ‘clean’ is the latest trend in healthy eating.

It simply means eating your foods in as natural a state as possible, including lots of fresh fruits and vegetables into your diet and avoiding foods laden with unhealthy fats, sugars and additives.

Winter brings with it a whole range of healthy veggies that can be made into sumptuously slow-cooked skin enhancing broths, soups and stews. So make the most of nature’s harvest.

6. Protect Your Skin From The Elements

You might find it hard to believe when you are shivering away during the winter months, but believe it or not sunscreen isn’t just a beauty product for the summertime.

Winter sun can still damage your skin and this is more of a problem if you are outdoors in the snow as snow glare strengthens the sun’s harmful UV rays.

Make sure you continue to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 to your face if you are going to be spending an extended period of time outdoors and don’t forget to reapply it regularly if you are going to be outside for a long time.

Also wrap up warm if you are going to be outdoors a hat and scarf that you can shield your face with will protect your skin from biting winds that can also dry out your skin and lead to permanent lines and wrinkles.

7. Don’t Forget The Rest!

Dry skin in winter can occur all over so remember to give your whole body a bit of extra care over the winter months.

Baths and showers that are too hot will dry out your skin as too much heat breaks down the skin’s lipid barrier, leading to skin dryness.

Try to keep your baths and showers lukewarm and don’t stay in for too long.

If you find that the skin on your body dries out so much in the colder months and becomes itchy or uncomfortable try adding baking soda or oatmeal to your bath.

And don’t forget to replenish lost moisture with a rich body butter or cream paying particular attention to those stubborn dry areas – the elbows, knees and ankles.

Home Remedies For Winter Skin

When it comes to dry winter skin it has to be said that natural is best. You cannot beat natural skin care if you want to give your skin a moisture boost that is healthy.

Many shop bought skin care products contain ingredients that irritate dry skin or make the problem worse.

The art of making your own dry skin home remedies is a great deal of fun and much easier than you may think.

There has been a great boom in recent years in the number of people turning to homemade skin care products to save money and to guarantee an all-natural, healthy approach to skin care.

The Naturally Skinsational eBook is packed full of home skin care remedies to suit all skin types.

There is an old adage that suggests as we age we have to choose between our face and our body.

What this refers to is the idea that if we want our bodies to remain slim and toned as we age, we have to sacrifice our faces.

And there is possibly some truth in this notion.

Basically as we get older if we remain very slim our faces can become gaunt looking, as low-weight usually shows up on the face first of all.

Some people even use this idea as a good reason to gain a few pounds as the years progress.

The reasoning being that carrying a few extra pounds helps to plump up the face, smooth out the skin and minimize the appearance of gauntness and wrinkles.

To Fill Or Not To Fill?

But what if you want to stay slim and toned as you age but don’t want your face to take on a gaunt appearance?

Well, many celebrities resort to cosmetic fillers to fill out the face. These fillers are usually injected into the area around the cheekbones to give the face a plumper, more youthful look.

They work to a certain extent, however they can be quite obvious and end up giving you the look of somebody who has had ‘work’ done on their face.

Many tabloid newspapers and gossip columnists have become expert at spotting those celebrities who have had facial fillers in an attempt to hold off the aging process.

The look has been dubbed the ‘pillow face’ by the press and certainly once you become familiar with this process it does become easier to spot who has had this type of work done.

The results can look good but more often than not fillers can give a person the ‘hamster cheeks’ or ‘chipmunk’ look!

So if you are concerned about your face looking gaunt as you age, perhaps you are naturally slim or maybe you have recently lost a substantial amount of weight, you may be wondering if there is anything you can do to improve the problem?

The good news is that you can plump out your face without the need for expensive cosmetic treatments that require regular upkeep and may spoil your looks rather than enhance them.

Not only will water help plump out your skin it will also help to improve the problems of dry skin and a sallow complexion.

2. Salmon And Other Oily Fish – Skin experts recommend eating salmon or any of the other oily fish (tuna, mackerel, sardines) around 3 times per week. You’ll be rewarded with plumper looking more youthful looking skin.
